How many journals in Ophthalmology and Optometry exist?

As per July 2022, there are a total of 124 active Scientific Journals within the discipline of Ophthalmology and/or Optometry according to the Web of Science classification. Journals that cover broad topics in medicine and science that might publish articles related to Ophthalmology and/or Optometry are not included.

Which are the main editorials?

There are more than 60 editorials/publishers. The one with most journals in Ophthalmology and Optometry is Elsevier (with 15 Journals such as Progress in Retina and Eye Research, Ocular Surface or Ophthalmology), followed by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins (with 12 Journals such as Retina, Cornea or Current Opinion in Ophthalmology) and Taylor and Francis (with 10 journals such as Ocular Immunology and Inflammation and Current Eye Research).

In figure below you can see the ‘scientific market share’ for each editorial/publisher.

How many new journals in Ophthalmology have appeared in the last 10 years?

There are 41 new journals in Ophthalmology and Optometry since 2010, this accounts for 33% of the total number of Scientific Journals in Ophthalmology and Optometry. The first Journal in Ophthalmology and Optometry that is still active came out in 1870’s and is the Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, with an Impact factor of 3.5 (as per July 2022).

How many journals in Ophthalmology and Optometry are open-access?

There are 105 Journals that offer Open-Access publications. This accounts for 85% approximately of the total number of journals in Ophthalmology and Optometry.

What is the average cost for Open-Access?

We have looked at the Open-Access costs in each of the 124 Journals in Ophthalmology and Optometry in July 2022. The average cost is 2155 +- 1630 USD. The most expensive Journal seems to be Ophthalmology and Therapy that charge up to 6000 USD and has an Impact factor of 3.54.

What are the advantages of publishing in Open-Access?

Some of the most important advantages of Open-Access publications are:
  • Scientific Research can be more rapidly and widely disseminated.
  • Low income countries/companies/scientists can have access to latest research which may trigger new research ideas.
  • Scientific articles available in Open Access have been found to attract more citations and online attention. (1,2)

Among the disadvantages, the most relevant one is the cost for Authors. Publishing in Open-Access often implies the Article Processing Charge (APC), which many researchers may not be able to afford.

Is there a relationship between Journal Impact Factor and Journal Publishing Costs?

We have correlated the Journal Impact Factor and the Open-Access Costs. There seems to be a low-to-mid correlation (R^2=0.26) between price and impact factor. This means there are very impactful journals that are not necessarily expensive (e.g., the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science has an impact factor of 4.05 and a cost of 1850 USD).

The journal Progress in Retinal and Eye Research has an Impact Factor of 18.34 which is way higher than all the other journals. This could potentially be considered an outlier in the Impact Factor vs Costs correlation below.
